Most lift engineers work with a range of chemicals and materials, from cleaning agents and lubricants to battery acids and other substances that could be hazardous if not properly controlled. Under the UK’s Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, it’s not just good practice to manage these risks, it’s a legal requirement. In this blog, we look at what substances fall under COSHH and how engineers can stay compliant.

Understanding the risks
COSHH applies to all types of substances that can harm health, including gases, vapours, dusts and mists. Even materials used routinely on site may fall within its scope.

The first step in staying compliant is understanding and identifying what constitutes a hazardous substance. Under COSHH, this can include:

  • Chemicals and cleaning products used during maintenance
  • Fumes or dust generated during servicing tasks
  • Oils, lubricants, adhesives, and other liquids

Once hazards have been identified, the risks must be assessed. This involves considering how engineers might be exposed, whether through inhalation, skin contact, or accidental ingestion, and determining whether that exposure could cause harm.

Implementing control measures
After assessing the risks, COSHH requires suitable control measures to prevent or minimise exposure. Practical steps include:

  • Using appropriate ventilation or extraction systems where fumes or dust could build up
  • Ensuring personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and used correctly
  • Implementing safe storage, handling and disposal procedures
  • Undertaking training on hazards and safe working practices

Record-keeping is also essential. Risk assessments and control measures should be reviewed regularly and updated when new substances are introduced or procedures change.

Training as a priority
To remain COSHH compliant, engineers must understand their responsibilities and be fully aware of the risks. This requires appropriate training to build and maintain awareness. Without this knowledge engineers can risk their health and those of others.

Effective training enables engineers to recognise hazards, interpret safety data sheets, understand labels and pictograms, and respond quickly and safely in everyday working situations.

A proactive approach to COSHH compliance
COSHH compliance isn’t just about meeting legal obligations, it’s about protecting lives, upholding professional standards, and safeguarding the long-term health of lift engineers. In environments where exposure to hazardous substances can happen daily, complacency is not an option.

By understanding the risks, implementing effective control measures, and prioritising ongoing training, lift engineers and employers can create safer working environments, while reducing the likelihood of costly incidents, ill health, or enforcement action.

To help support engineers in staying informed and confident in their responsibilities, Elevating Safety Solutions offers a CPD course on Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). This practical, self-paced training equips engineers to identify hazards, apply appropriate controls and maintain best practice on site.
