Get to know the founder of Elevating Safety Solutions, Stewart Proctor. Read the interview below to find out about his experience in the lift industry and what he is working on now.
What is your background?
I’ve been in the lift industry for over 35 years starting as an apprentice then gaining experience as a fitter, engineer, installer and project manager, through to becoming a consultant. I’ve always wanted to learn the ropes across the industry, getting stuck into the practical work, as well as achieving academically including a degree in health and safety. I got to a point in my career when I was able to set up my own lift company which I went on to sell. My focus now is on Elevating Safety Solutions (ESS).
Why did you set up Elevating Safety Solutions?
I launched ESS in 2008 as I found there was a gap in the market for someone to provide lift and escalator compliance solutions, support and training. We have been providing this for over 13 years now.
What does your job involve?
My main role is providing consultancy to lift companies as well as developing our training offering on our new website.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
My job isn’t very glamorous but I really do enjoy everything about it, especially when it comes to problem solving, which I thrive on.
How has health and safety changed in the lift industry since you started your career? People are more aware of the requirements to work safely and not to take shortcuts. There is also more of a focus on training and compliance with legislation.
What is your most memorable moment in your career?
Starting ESS of course!
What is your biggest achievement to date?
I recently completed a Master’s Degree in Lift Engineering at Northampton University. It’s not easy studying while running a business so I’m particularly proud to have this under my belt.
What plans do you have for ESS over the next few years?
I want to expand the online learning packages and get more involved with developing industry standards.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Open, honest and trustworthy.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I really enjoy playing squash, although I tend to avoid playing with my son who is a professional squash player – I never stand a chance! I’m also a dog lover also enjoy taking my two on long walks.
We’re off to the pub, what’s your order?
A proper pint of real Ale.
